These terms are related, but they are not always used to mean exactly the same thing.
GPA
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It represents the average grade-point value earned from your courses for a particular academic period or according to the method used by your school. When courses have different credit values, the calculation can give more weight to courses carrying more credits.
Semester GPA
A semester GPA measures your performance during one semester or academic term. It is calculated from the courses included in that particular period rather than from your entire academic history.
CGPA
CGPA generally means Cumulative Grade Point Average. It combines academic results across multiple semesters or terms. When semesters contain different numbers of credits, the cumulative calculation should account for those credits rather than simply averaging the semester GPAs.
How Is GPA Calculated?
A credit-weighted GPA gives courses with more credits a greater influence on the final result.
Find the Grade Points
Convert each letter grade into the grade-point value used by your grading scale.
Multiply by Credits
Multiply each course’s grade-point value by the number of credit hours for that course.
Divide the Totals
Add the quality points and divide them by the total number of credits included in the calculation.
GPA Calculation Example
Suppose a student has three courses with the following grades and credit hours.

Why Do Credit Hours Matter?
Credit hours determine how much influence a course has in a credit-weighted GPA. A 4-credit course contributes more to the calculation than a 1-credit course with the same grade because its grade points are multiplied by more credits.
What If Courses Have Equal Credits?
When every course carries the same number of credits, the credit weighting does not change the relative contribution of the courses. In that situation, averaging the grade points produces the same result as the credit-weighted calculation.
GPA Scales Can Be Different
A 4.0 scale is common, but institutions can use different grade-point values, plus and minus policies, weighted systems, or conversion methods. The scale displayed on each calculator should therefore be checked against your institution’s policy.
Weighted and Unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA generally uses the regular grade-point scale, while a weighted GPA may give additional points for certain advanced or more difficult courses. The exact rules depend on the school or institution.
