Calculation Breakdown
Results are estimates based on the information entered and the 4.0 scale used by this calculator. Your institution may use a different grading scale, rounding method, or CGPA policy. Always use your official academic record for final results.
How to Use This CGPA Calculator
Use this CGPA calculator to calculate your cumulative GPA from semester results on a 4.0 scale. Enter the GPA and GPA-counted credits for each semester, then select Calculate CGPA. The calculator combines the terms into one credit-weighted result.
Already have a CGPA from earlier semesters? Turn on Already have a previous CGPA? and enter your existing CGPA, the credits included in it, and your new semester results. This lets you update your CGPA without entering every past term again.
CGPA Formula: How Is Cumulative GPA Calculated?
CGPA is calculated as a weighted average. Each semester’s GPA is weighted by the number of credits included in that term:
CGPA = Σ (semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ semester credits
Multiplying a semester GPA by its credits gives the semester’s quality points. Add the quality points from all included semesters, then divide by the total credits counted. A semester with more credits has a larger effect on your cumulative GPA than a semester with fewer credits.
Example: Calculate CGPA From Semester GPA
Suppose your results are 3.25 over 15 credits, 3.60 over 18 credits, and 3.45 over 16 credits:
- 3.25 × 15 = 48.75 quality points
- 3.60 × 18 = 64.80 quality points
- 3.45 × 16 = 55.20 quality points
The total is 168.75 quality points across 49 credits. Divide 168.75 by 49 to get a CGPA of 3.44 out of 4.00, rounded to two decimal places.
A simple average of those three semester GPAs is 3.43. It differs because the semesters have different credit totals. If every semester has the same number of credits, a simple average gives the same result as the credit-weighted formula.
Update Your CGPA With a New Semester
If you know your current cumulative GPA and the credits included in it, combine that record with a new semester instead of re-entering all your previous terms:
Updated CGPA = [(previous CGPA × previous credits) + (new semester GPA × new semester credits)] ÷ (previous credits + new semester credits)
For example, a 3.20 CGPA over 60 credits followed by a 3.80 GPA over 15 new credits gives:
[(3.20 × 60) + (3.80 × 15)] ÷ (60 + 15) = 249 ÷ 75 = 3.32
Use the GPA hours or credits behind your existing CGPA on your transcript. Do not count the new semester twice—once inside your previous CGPA and again as a separate term. If your transcript lists total quality points, those unrounded totals may produce a more exact result than calculating from a CGPA rounded to two decimals.
Which Credits Should You Enter?
Enter the credits your school includes in its GPA calculation. “Credits earned,” “credits attempted,” and “GPA hours” can mean different things on a transcript. Pass/fail courses, withdrawals, repeated classes, and transfer credits may be handled differently by each institution, so check your transcript or academic rules if you are unsure.
The calculator estimates a result from the GPA and credit values you enter. If your school reports semester GPAs rounded to two decimal places, your result may differ slightly from an official cumulative GPA calculated from the original course-level grade points.
GPA vs. CGPA
A semester GPA describes the grades included in one term. CGPA, or cumulative grade point average, combines the academic work counted across several terms. A strong or weak new semester changes your CGPA in proportion to its credits and the credits already included in your record.
If you need to calculate GPA from individual course grades and credit hours rather than combine semester GPAs, use our GPA calculator.
Scale and Official-Result Note
This CGPA calculator uses a 4.0 scale. Enter semester GPAs that are already on that scale; do not mix 4.0 values with grades from a 5.0, 10.0, percentage, or other system. If your institution uses another scale, follow its official conversion method rather than assuming a direct conversion.
Your university’s rules determine the official CGPA used for graduation, scholarships, admissions, and academic standing. In particular, policies for repeated courses, non-graded courses, credit totals, and rounding can make an official transcript result differ from this estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate CGPA from semester GPA?
Multiply each semester GPA by the credits counted for that semester. Add those quality points and divide by the total credits. This weights each semester according to its credit hours.
Can I just average my semester GPAs?
Only if all semesters have equal credit totals. When credit totals differ, use a weighted CGPA calculation so each term contributes in proportion to its credits.
Can I calculate cumulative GPA without entering every semester?
Yes. If you know your current CGPA and the credits included in it, use the previous-CGPA option and add only the new semester’s GPA and credits.
Why does my calculator result differ from my transcript?
Your institution may use a different scale, GPA-credit total, repeat-course rule, or rounding method. Also, semester GPAs rounded on a transcript can produce a small difference when combined. Use your school’s transcript and academic policy for the official figure.
