SGPA to CGPA
Add an SGPA entry for each completed semester. Credits are optional โ when provided, the calculator uses the credit-weighted average most universities apply officially.
Simple average vs. credit-weighted average
Weighted CGPA = ฮฃ (SGPA ร credits) รท ฮฃ credits
Leave the credits fields blank and you get a simple average of every SGPA row. Fill in credits for a semester and the calculator starts computing a weighted average too, shown alongside the simple one โ but only the rows with credits entered count toward that weighted figure. If you fill in credits for some semesters and leave others blank, the weighted number won't represent your full record; fill in all of them or none.
Averaging four semesters, with and without uneven credits
Four completed semesters, SGPAs of 8.10, 7.85, 8.40, and 8.20, each worth 20 credits. Simple average: (8.10 + 7.85 + 8.40 + 8.20) รท 4 = 32.55 รท 4 = 8.14 CGPA. Credits are equal here, so the weighted average matches at 8.14.
Now say the fourth semester was only 12 credits because it included a thesis. Weighted: (8.10ร20 + 7.85ร20 + 8.40ร20 + 8.20ร12) รท (20+20+20+12) = 585.4 รท 72 = 8.13 CGPA. Close, but worth checking whenever your credit loads aren't identical across semesters.
Modeling the semesters you haven't finished yet
Add your completed semesters, then add extra rows with hypothetical SGPAs for the semesters still ahead of you. Try a few different targets to see what you'd need to average to graduate at, say, a 7.5 CGPA โ remaining semesters carry more weight than most students expect, and this is the fastest way to see exactly how much.
Two ways your CGPA gets computed โ same answer either way
Most universities compute a credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs, recomputed as each semester finishes. Some instead recompute from every individual course across your whole degree โ grade points times course credits, divided by total credits. The two methods are algebraically equivalent and land on the same number; the second is just how most transcript-generation software happens to do the arithmetic.
Reading your CGPA on the 10-point scale
- 9.0 and above โ Outstanding. Competitive for top international graduate programmes.
- 8.0โ9.0 โ Excellent. Comfortably above first-class honours in most systems.
- 7.0โ8.0 โ Very good. Meets the bar for most graduate programmes and competitive jobs.
- 6.0โ7.0 โ Good. Above the average for most engineering and science programmes.
- Below 6.0 โ Passing in most systems but may limit options for selective opportunities.
Entries that quietly distort your CGPA
- Filling in credits for only some semesters. As above โ a partial set of credits produces a weighted average of that partial set, not your full record. Enter credits for every semester or none.
- Including incomplete semesters. Only completed semesters with a final SGPA belong in this calculator โ leave out anything still in progress.
- Mixing grade scales. If you transferred between universities on different scales (10-point vs. 4-point), don't enter them side by side. Convert to one scale first.
- Counting an intersession twice. If your university already folds summer or winter session results into the following regular semester's SGPA, don't add a separate row for it.
- Assuming retakes fully erase a failure. Some universities replace the failed grade in the CGPA calculation; others average both attempts. Check your school's policy before assuming a retake fully recovers the average.
Rows and credits that don't behave the way you'd assume
Do I need to enter credits for every semester?
Only if you want the weighted figure to reflect your full record. The calculator computes the weighted average only from rows that have credits filled in โ if you enter credits for three semesters out of five, the weighted number reflects just those three, not all five.
How is CGPA different from GPA?
GPA usually refers to a single semester or a single specific calculation. CGPA is the cumulative average across every semester you've completed in your degree.
Will a low first semester ruin my CGPA?
Only temporarily. As you complete more semesters, the weight of any single semester decreases. Many students recover from a weak first semester to a strong final CGPA.
My university uses a 4-point scale โ does this calculator work?
Yes. The math is identical regardless of scale. Just make sure all values you enter are on the same scale; the calculator can't detect or convert between scales.
If your transcript uses percentages instead of grade points
CGPA isn't always the format a form wants โ these move between CGPA, percentage, and GPA.
