Why the subtractor defaults to 7.5

The field above defaults to 7.5 because Percentage = (SGPA × 10) − 7.5 is the formula published by AICTE and used by a number of large university councils. With an SGPA of 8.20 that's (8.20 × 10) − 7.5 = 74.5%. The subtraction exists because a 10.0 SGPA doesn't line up with a flat 100% — grade points represent bands of percentages, not single values, so a constant is needed to land the conversion in a realistic place.

Setting the subtractor for a different formula

• Set it to 0 for a plain Percentage = SGPA × 10 conversion, used by a handful of universities.
• Skip the factor field entirely if your university uses Percentage = SGPA × 9.5 — CBSE's formula for board reporting, also used by some affiliated colleges. It's a different shape of formula (a multiplier, not a subtracted constant), so no factor value here reproduces it. Multiply your SGPA by 9.5 directly instead: an 8.20 SGPA gives 77.9%.
• Check your handbook first if your institution publishes a lookup table instead of a formula — for example, mapping 7.0–7.5 SGPA to a fixed percentage band. No subtractor value reproduces a table.

Where the calculated percentage shouldn't replace your SGPA

• Official transcripts report SGPA and CGPA directly — don't substitute a calculated percentage on official documents.
• Foreign university applications generally want your raw SGPA/CGPA plus your university's grading scale; credential-evaluation services do their own conversion.
• Comparing across universities doesn't work off this number — an 8.0 SGPA at one university isn't the same percentage as an 8.0 at another, since each council picked its own constant.

Converting a sixth-semester SGPA

Sixth-semester SGPA of 7.65, standard subtractive formula: (7.65 × 10) − 7.5 = 69%. Same SGPA on the ×9.5 formula: 72.68%. On the plain ×10 formula: 76.5%. Three different, equally defensible answers — which is why the factor field needs to match what your institution actually publishes, not whichever default looks right.

Using this for CGPA instead of SGPA

The SGPA field doesn't check whether the number you enter is a single semester or your cumulative average — enter your CGPA instead and the same formula applies. Converting each semester individually and averaging the results gives almost the same answer, since the formulas here are linear.
